Studies in ProgressThe Fairbanks Institute currently has two longitudinal cohort studies involving the collection of biological samples and information in progress. These studies, collectively known in the community as the Indiana Health Study, are focusing on coronary artery disease (CAD) and type 2 diabetes, which are common in the Central Indiana population. The CAD cohort study is enrolling people with CAD as evidenced by a history of coronary artery bypass graft surgery, diagnostic angiogram or angioplasty with stent placement (cases), as well as people of similar age, gender and ethnicity, but with no history of CAD (controls). A total of 1500 subjects, 750 cases and 750 controls will be enrolled. Retrospective and prospective clinical information on study subjects in the CAD study will be obtained from information available for research purposes in the Indiana Network for Patient Care (INPC), the nation's first regional health information exchange, and through annual telephone interviews. The type 2 diabetes cohort study is enrolling people with a confirmed history of type 2 diabetes as defined by the American Diabetes Association (cases), as well as people of similar age, gender and ethnicity, but with normal fasting blood glucose levels (controls). A total of 1000 subjects, 500 cases and 500 controls, will be enrolled. Retrospective and prospective clinical information on study subjects in the type 2 diabetes study will be obtained from information available for research purposes in the INPC as well as at clinic visits in years 2 and 5 of the study. Additional biological samples will be collected at the 2 and 5 year clinic visits as well.
